Research Lead, Designer
Leading the VR and AR research team for JCB's Teleskid project, I spearheaded the development of immersive experiences to revolutionize how potential buyers interact with JCB products. We aimed to mitigate the challenges posed by the limited availability of demo units and to tap into the vast North American skid steer market, thereby increasing JCB's brand awareness in a highly competitive sector.
The virtual reality experience we developed utilized Unreal Engine for the Oculus Rift headset. It was a strategic response to the difficulties customers faced in test-driving the Teleskid. By replicating the Teleskid's controls with the Rift VR controllers, we created a highly realistic and interactive experience. Users could explore the Teleskid's unique capabilities, such as its elevated reach and height, by completing various tasks in a railyard simulation. The "John Beer" mode further distinguished Teleskid from its competitors by showcasing its superiority in a comparative context.
On the augmented reality front, we designed an experience that could be easily activated by scanning a JCB Teleskid brochure. This AR experience was developed using Unity for mobile devices. The experience allowed users to interact with a scaled-down version of the Teleskid by providing a versatile and accessible demonstration platform.
This initiative was a testament to the power of emerging technologies in transforming traditional marketing strategies and providing novel solutions to industry challenges. The collaboration was not just a significant step for JCB but also a valuable learning experience for our team by pushing the boundaries of VR and AR applications in a commercial context.
